At the extreme eastern edge of the region, in the province of Gorizia and close to the border with Slovenia, Collio constitutes a renowned area for the production of fine wines, which have been awarded of Controlled Designation of Origin (D.O.C.) status since as far back as 1968, ranking among the first in Italy to receive such recognition.

Some wines survived by accident. In the 1970s, Schioppettino was not disappearing only because of powdery mildew or phylloxera: it was disappearing because it was not on the list.
