How to read a wine
A wine isn't understood from its label
A label states a vintage, a grape, an appellation. It doesn't say why the wine tastes the way it does. For that you need two things the label leaves out: where it was born, and who made it.

Eastern Friuli is the right place to start: here the border has shifted many times, and each time it left something in the glass.
Collio
At the extreme eastern edge of the region, in the province of Gorizia and close to the border with Slovenia, Collio constitutes a renowned area for the production of fine wines, which have been awarded of Controlled Designation of Origin (D.O.C.) status since as far back as 1968, ranking among the first in Italy to receive such recognition.

Some wines survived by accident. In the 1970s, Schioppettino was not disappearing only because of powdery mildew or phylloxera: it was disappearing because it was not on the list.
